INDIVIDUAL THERAPY · MILFORD, CT
Therapy with someone who knows your full story.
At CMHS, your therapist works alongside your psychiatrist — in the same practice, sharing the same context, building a plan that actually fits you.
INDIVIDUAL THERAPY AT CMHS
One-on-one support that fits your actual situation.
Individual therapy gives you dedicated time with a licensed clinician to work through what's happening in your life — whether that's anxiety, depression, grief, relationship stress, or a sense that something is off that you haven't been able to name.
At CMHS, your therapist works in the same practice as our psychiatrists. If medication is part of your picture, your providers can coordinate directly — without you having to play go-between.
WHY IT MATTERS
Life doesn't come with an instruction manual.
Stress, loss, relationship struggles, and emotional patterns that don't make sense to you — these things affect your work, your relationships, and your sense of self. Therapy gives you a structured space to understand what's happening and make real changes.
Individual therapy can help you:
- Understand the patterns driving anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties
- Build more effective ways of coping with stress and difficult emotions
- Work through grief, trauma, or major life transitions
- Develop clearer communication and stronger relationships
- Find confidence, clarity, and a steadier sense of self
Seeking therapy isn't a sign that something is wrong with you. It's a way of taking your mental health seriously.
OUR APPROACH
Collaborative, individualized, and built around you.
Therapy at CMHS is not a one-size approach. Your therapist will work with you to understand your history, your goals, and what approaches are most likely to help. Sessions evolve as you do.
We draw on evidence-based modalities including CBT, DBT, psychodynamic therapy, and trauma-informed approaches — applying the right tools for your specific situation rather than a default protocol.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Starting therapy at CMHS.
You don't need to have everything figured out before your first appointment. The intake process is designed to give us a clear picture of where you are and what you're looking for.
- Initial intake to understand your history, symptoms, and goals
- Matched with a therapist based on your needs and preferences
- Regular sessions — typically weekly or biweekly — at a pace that works for you
- Coordination with psychiatry if medication is part of your care
- Ongoing collaboration to adjust your treatment plan as you progress
THE CMHS DIFFERENCE
Your therapist and psychiatrist work as one team.
At most practices, therapy and psychiatry run on separate tracks. Your therapist doesn't know what your prescriber decided, and your prescriber doesn't know what came up in your last session. You end up being the bridge between them.
At CMHS, both providers are in the same building, on the same team, and in direct communication. That means your care is actually coordinated — not just described as coordinated.

Common questions about individual therapy
Is individual therapy only for people with serious mental health conditions?
Not at all. Many people come to individual therapy to work through everyday stress, relationship challenges, life transitions, or simply to better understand themselves. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit — in fact, starting before things feel overwhelming is often when therapy is most effective. At CMHS, we work with people across a wide range of concerns, from managing anxiety and low mood to navigating major life changes.
Will I need medication as part of my treatment?
Therapy sessions themselves do not involve medication. However, if your therapist feels medication might support your progress, they may recommend a consultation with our psychiatric team. Any decisions about medication are made collaboratively with you — nothing is prescribed without your knowledge and consent. Many clients benefit from therapy alone; others find that a combination works best for them.
How long will I need to attend individual therapy?
The length of therapy varies depending on what you’re working through and the goals you set with your therapist. Some people find meaningful progress in a focused series of sessions, while others prefer ongoing support over a longer period. Your therapist will check in on your progress regularly and adjust the approach as needed. There’s no fixed timeline — the pace is guided by you.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes. CMHS offers both in-person sessions at our Connecticut office and secure virtual sessions for clients who prefer to meet from home. Online therapy is available for most of our services and is a great option if your schedule, location, or comfort level makes in-person visits difficult. Your care quality remains the same regardless of which format you choose.
