Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about getting started with therapy, psychiatry, and specialized treatment at CMHS in Milford, CT.
Getting Started
How do I get started at CMHS?
Getting started is straightforward. Reach out to us online or give us a call, and our intake team will help match you with the right provider based on your needs, insurance, and availability. We'll walk you through everything before your first appointment so you feel prepared.
What will happen during my first session?
Your first session is a conversation, not an evaluation. You and your therapist will talk about what brought you in, your goals, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. Your therapist will explain the process and answer any questions you have. There's no pressure — just a genuine chance to connect.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you're asking the question, it's usually a good sign. Therapy is beneficial for anyone who wants to better understand themselves, manage stress, improve relationships, or work through something difficult — you don't need to be in crisis to benefit. We're happy to talk through your situation before you commit to anything.
About Therapy
Can therapy help if I'm not sure what's wrong?
Absolutely. Many people come in feeling that something is "off" without being able to name it. You don't need a diagnosis or a clear reason. Your therapist will help you explore those feelings, gain clarity, and develop tools to feel better — wherever you're starting from.
Isn't therapy only for serious mental health issues?
Not at all. Therapy is valuable across a wide range — from everyday stress, life transitions, and relationship challenges to more complex mental health conditions. Think of it as a dedicated space to reflect honestly, work through what's weighing on you, and grow.
How long does therapy typically take?
It depends on your goals and what you're working through. Some clients notice meaningful change within a few months; others find value in longer-term or ongoing sessions. Your therapist will regularly check in on your progress and adjust the plan based on what you need.
Is what I share in therapy confidential?
Yes. Everything you share with your therapist is confidential. There are narrow exceptions required by law — such as if there is a risk of imminent harm to yourself or others — and your therapist will explain these clearly at the start of treatment. Outside of those situations, your privacy is fully protected.
Insurance & Costs
What insurance plans do you accept?
We accept most major insurance plans including Anthem, Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, ConnectiCare, Medicaid (HUSKY), Optum, and United Healthcare. If you're unsure whether we accept your plan, contact us and we'll verify your coverage before your first appointment.
How much will sessions cost?
Your cost will depend on your insurance plan and the type of service. If you're using insurance, we're happy to verify your benefits upfront. You can also call the member services number on the back of your insurance card to ask about your specific cost for therapy or medication management sessions before you begin.
Appointments & Logistics
Do you offer in-person and telehealth appointments?
Yes — we offer both in-person and virtual appointments for therapy and medication management. We'd love to have you at our Milford, CT office, but we understand that's not always possible. Whatever works best for you works for us.
How often will I need to come in?
Most clients start with weekly sessions, especially early in treatment when consistency matters most. As you make progress, you and your therapist may decide to move to bi-weekly or monthly check-ins. The schedule is flexible and built around what's right for you.
Specialized Services
Do you offer therapy for children and teens?
Do you offer psychiatric medication management?
Yes. In addition to therapy, CMHS offers medication management services. Our psychiatric providers can evaluate whether medication might be a helpful part of your treatment plan, and will coordinate closely with your therapist if you're seeing one here.
What is SPRAVATO® and who might benefit from it?
SPRAVATO® (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray treatment for adults with treatment-resistant depression — meaning depression that hasn't responded adequately to at least two antidepressants. It's administered in our office under medical supervision. If you've tried multiple medications without relief, SPRAVATO® may be worth exploring with your provider.
