Process what happened — and get to the other side of it. At your pace. At CMHS, licensed EMDR-trained therapists help you reprocess difficult memories safely — and if anxiety or depression came along with the trauma, your therapist and psychiatrist treat it together, from the same plan.
EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is an evidence-based therapy for trauma and distressing memories. The idea behind it: when something overwhelming happens, the memory sometimes gets stored raw, so a smell or a sound or an anniversary can bring the whole thing flooding back as if it's happening now. EMDR helps the brain reprocess those memories so they become something you remember rather than something you relive.
In sessions, your therapist guides you through brief, structured sets of back-and-forth attention, often eye movements, while you hold a piece of the memory in mind. You stay awake, aware, and in control the entire time. You don't have to narrate every detail of what happened for it to work, which is one reason many people who've avoided talk therapy find EMDR approachable.
EMDR at CMHS never starts with the hardest memory on day one. The early phases are about history, stabilization, and building the coping skills you'll use during processing. Your therapist moves at the speed you can actually tolerate, and you can stop at any point in any session. That pacing isn't a courtesy; it's what makes the processing work.
And because trauma often travels with depression, anxiety, or sleep that's fallen apart, our integrated team matters here. If medication support would help steady the ground while you do this work, our psychiatric clinicians coordinate directly with your EMDR therapist: one plan, not two parallel treatments.
Expect the first few sessions to feel like regular therapy — history, goals, skills. Processing sessions come after that foundation is set. Most people are seen within a week of reaching out, in person in Milford or by video anywhere in Connecticut. If you're not sure whether EMDR or another approach fits your situation, say so on the intake form — matching you to the right modality is our job, not yours.
